Research Papers

It’s hard to believe that we have entered the second half of the 1st semester!  We start our research papers this week.  For the Accelerated English class, topics need to be chosen by the end of the week, all other classes will be researching Innovation in Flight: The Wright Brothers.  Before we begin creating thesis statements and taking notes, we need to read a little about our topics in encyclopedias.  You can use the following links to find encyclopedias online:

http://www.encyclopedia.com

http://www.infoplease.com

http://encarta.msn.com/

Remember that encyclopedias are to be used for background information.   We do not use encyclopedias as resources for research papers!

The databases we use to find articles are Salem Press and the General One File from the Gale group.  The Salem Press can be accessed from any computer, at home or school.  The General One File can only be accessed inside one of the buildings  of the Rolla Public Schools.  The websites are:

September Already??

It is hard to believe that September is already upon us!  We are entering our third full week of school, which means progress reports will be handed out this week.  If your child fails to bring one home, let us know!  This month we will be learning about the different databases available in our library, reading The Breadwinner and Up Before Daybreak (a non-fiction book), and working on research skills.  We will begin the research unit Oct 1 and the paper will be due the Tuesday before Thanksgiving break.

Your children should be reading their AR in the evenings.  Each has been given their goals, none of which are over 20 points.  The goal needs to be obtained by Oct. 14.  If you have any questions please feel free to call or email me.

We have had a great start to the year!  I look forward to the upcoming months!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back, Everyone!  I am excited that this year has been off to a great start!  We have entered our 2nd full week of class and assignments are now posted on the blog site.  Click on the 8th Grade tab if you are in my 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 7th hour.  Click on the Accelerated Class tab if you are in my 6th hour.  It is here you will find the week’s assignments.  This site will be updated each weekend.  If you are absent, feel free to look on here to see what you are missing.

I look forward to a fantastic year, especially if it continues as the past week and half has been!

Mrs. Dalton
